One of the first questions I ask when putting together an estimate is what pieces a couple thinks they would like or need in their wedding suite. Here’s a breakdown of what a full wedding invitation usually consists of!
Main invitation – This is what will go on most people’s fridges and most definitely in your mom’s (and c’mon, yours too) scrapbook (we’ll have a post coming soon with info and ideas of what to put on your main invitation).
RSVP/Reply card – This is what guests will mail back to you saying if they can make it to your wedding or not. It has a line for guests to write their names, check yes or no, and includes a date for them to send their reply back before (depends on when your venue/caterer needs a final count, but we usually recommend 4 weeks before your wedding). Are you having a sit down dinner where guests choose their meal in advance? That needs to be on there as well. Otherwise, that’s just about it. Traditionally, a reply card comes with its own self-addressed stamped (yes, it must have postage!) envelope for guests to mail their reply. We have also seen couples use RSVP postcards – they are a bit less expensive (not paying for the RSVP envelope, no addressing RSVP envelopes, and only need to buy postcard postage), but definitely not as private.
Details/Info card(s) – This is where you’ll include important information for the event. It’s possible to have separate cards for each one of these, but more often we see couples combining these onto 1 or 2 cards, especially since a lot of this information will be on your wedding website. Either way, it’s not a good idea to include any of this information on your reply card since guests will be sending that back to you! Ideas of things to include on details card(s):
- Ceremony & reception info – be sure include addresses and start time
- Map or directions – although we’re heavily in the age of Waze and GPS, some guests prefer printed directions and maps can be awfully pretty when included in your invitation suite!
- Shuttle or parking info
- Wedding website (a post with information on setting up your own coming soon)
- After party, Sunday brunch, welcome dinner
- Travel or airport info
What information do you OMIT from your wedding invitations? Registry info. Save that for shower invitations, your website, and word of mouth.
